KUPU TĀPIRI

This page contained new items and amendments to existing entries which had been included in the main database but were not yet integrated into the alphabetical files on-line. All additional material for Te Papakupu o te Taitokerau previously included on this page has now been integrated into the main dictionary files. It has been replaced by links to a database of new words, technical terms, and other material compiled between 1975 and 2007, and which was included in the search results from Te Papakupu until 2014. It will be indexed separately when we find a new search programme. (See further notes, below)
Material gathered 1975-2007 from a variety of sources, comprising brief entries.

FORMATTING NOTE
These files are set to display in Arial Maori or Times New Roman Māori truetype fonts. If you do not have these fonts, and wish to see macrons instead of umlauts, you can download the Māori fonts from the macronized fonts page.

.

These files contain glosses of more than 20,000 Māori words, including both newly coined (to about 1997) and established technical terms, as well as place names, names of people mentioned in the Bible, and other material, some of which is probably no longer easily accessible elsewhere. It is the culmination of a list compiled and added to regularly first by Richard Benton, Tawhiro Maxwell and Hiria Tumoana at Te Wāhanga Kaupapa Māori of NZCER from the late 1970s, and continued in collaboration with many other people, primarily to assist and inform teachers in bilingual and Māori-medium schools in publications and through the Te Wahapū CBCS (proto-web site). When Dr Benton retired from NZCER, Peter Keegan took over the coordinating role for several years and added thousands of new words, including many biblical and scientific references.

The database of Māori headwords has been broken into individual files, which may be inspected through the links below. These will be much easier to access when we have a new search facility! The sources from which the material has been obtained are listed after the links.
